Set Up Traits (Time-Sensitive Events)
Overview
Traits are time-sensitive events you can run inside your app, such as:
- Seasonal sales
- Product launches
- Flash bidding events (Frenzies)
Traits help automate campaigns by scheduling content, discounts, and product visibility.
TNL’s AI agent Dave assists with setup and automation.
Access Traits
- Go to Commerce Menu
- Select Traits
- Click New Trait
Choose a Trait Template
You’ll see three template options:
1. Sale Event (e.g., Boxing Day Sale)
A time-limited promotional sale.
2. Product Launch
Used to launch new products at a scheduled time.
3. Flash Frenzy
A time-limited bidding event for a product.
Each template includes automated actions Dave can help configure.
Configure a Sale Event
1. Basic Information
Enter:
- Event Name
- Description
- Trait Type (Seasonal Sale, Product Launch, Frenzy)
- Start and End Time
- Time Zone
2. Country Targeting
Select:
- Specific regions
- Or all regions
This ensures the event is shown only where applicable.
3. Event Actions
Show Promotional Block
You can:
- Select a block promoting the sale
- Schedule it to go live during the event
- Automatically hide it after the event ends
Create Discount (Automated via Dave)
You can configure:
- Discount type (percentage or fixed amount)
- Discount value
- Code prefix
- Execution timing
Dave can automatically create the discount inside Shopify.
Link Campaign
Associate the Trait with a campaign for tracking and reporting.
Configure a Product Launch
For Product Launch Traits, you can:
- Enter basic event details
- Set schedule and time zone
- Target specific regions
Additional Launch Actions
- Enable the specific product at launch time
- Set promotional blocks live
- Link to a campaign
This ensures products go live exactly when scheduled.
Configure a Flash Frenzy (Bidding Event)
Flash Frenzy allows you to run a limited-time bidding experience.
Required Setup
- Event name and description
- Schedule and time zone
- Country targeting
Frenzy-Specific Settings
- Select the product
- Set quantity (number of winners)
- Starting price
- Minimum bid increment
- Reserve price
- Link campaign
This creates a competitive, time-limited purchasing experience.

Traits allow you to:
- Schedule promotions in advance
- Automate block visibility
- Automate discount creation
- Automatically hide promotions after they end
- Plan campaigns quarterly and “set it and forget it”
